One of my favourite programmes recently was The Great British Bake Off. It involved lots of cake, what was not to like?
It reminded me of one of my favourite aspects of my youth, the country shows - the baking section was always one of the most competitive parts. A family friend was the queen of the bakery competitions. Bread, cakes, biscuits and even cheesemaking always saw her coming away with an armful of rosettes.
Now as you can imagine these were very competitive affairs and as such it could get bit political. I won't go on about my political fallout but as an 11 year old I should have kept a certain cup after winning it three years in a row but someone decided to make up a rule so I couldn't (I'm still bitter). And you thought the labour leadership was rough....
To return to our baking friend, in a bid to stop her winning ways, one particular show did the unthinkable and invited her to be the judge one year to stop her entering. It was the most obvious and devious attempt at trying to stop her (and down so I think out of jealousy). She is a very quiet, laid back and nice person so her retort took us all by surprise. She politely turned down the invite to judge at the show and....
...entered every class, three times. Unsurprisingly she won 1st, 2nd and 3rd across the board.
So, you can win all the time.
