It is very rare I ever talk of current affairs and politics on this blog, an certainly not sensibly. But, this morning was one of those that had me grrrring through gritted teeth.
Let me paint a lovely picture: My goodself, still in nightwear out doing the morning care for the foster cats and outside unit (current occupancy 10, 3 on cage rest needing meds). You can imagine feeding, cleaning and medicating such a brood on a Sunday morning. So to cheer us along I put on their TV and got one of those Sunday morning debates debacles.
The subject was Gordon Brown's proposal of the patient charter where in exchange for a health service we promise to be good. Well fair enough. We have to take responsibility for ourselves.
Some of the panel and audience were mad keen for this - smokers, fatties, alcoholics and sluts shouldn't get treatment for having been so wayward with their smoking, eating, drinking and shagging. Grrrr - is it me or have we a growing section of society that can't see beyond black and white?
'But' says one man ' it's good because if there's only one treatment going and two people need it, one fat and one fit, the fit bloke should get it because he has more chance of it working'.
Yes but what if the fit bloke is a total selfish bastard criminal and the fat bloke is a kindly community minded vicar?
I suspect a high proportion of the smoking, drinking, eating, sluts amongst us use one or all of those past times as a form of self medication because society has become so disjointed in the first place.
Yes let's all take better care of ourselves, but let's take better care of one another too.
Absolutely! Don't tell me I can't use the NHS because I smoke to keep myself sane (ish) under the pressures of life! How very dare they!
Are there any of those cakes left....?

Totally agree! Whenever I hear tee-total, non-smoking, healthy eating celibates evangelising about their lifestyles I get the urge to do all those things, in abundance.
