I''ve not been a teleaddict for years, mainly due to the fact I am confined to the study for the vast majority of my time and tuning in my little (and soon to be defunct) black and white tv would test the patience of a saint. Sometimes I do treat myself and sit on a comfy chair downstairs and gaze in wonder at the magic box in the corner.
Few programmes have grabbed me in recent years. That thing where time stood still for a bit, see I can't even remember what it was called. Bah, didn't grab me. Lost - well I got so far and then it went to satellite. I love Dexter but somewhere, someone screened series 3 in secret from me and now I'm all behind. Heroes - nope. All these series that people ooh and ahh over, I seemed immune to their charms. Would Downton Abbey light the wick of my love for period pieces? er no, no it wouldn't.
Then lo and behold last night I turned on The Pillars of the Earth thinking it was a one off film, having heard nothing about it, and my viewing prayers were answered. And no, not just for the lust factor of Rufus Sewell. A strong cast provides the grounding for a good old medieval romp, but the head and shoulder star of the night was undoubtedly Matthew Macfayden - a lovely understated performance from him. Ian McShane is always value, and as the morally bankrupt cleric he is deliciously dastardly. Two hours just flew by last night and I can't wait to tune in next week. Based on Ken Follett's novel, it has set itself up to be a good honest, no gimmicks adaptation - if you like historical drama with a human edge, do tune in. If I had a glass of mead I would surely raise it.
Oh who am I kidding, this post will not go unadorned of lusty loveliness....
