Last year we flew out to Ireland to meet up with Gran & Uncle John who were already holidaying over there. They adore Ireland and as last year was Gran’s 80th she decided she’d like us to join them for the last weekend and we would all go together to Mondello Park for the British GT race. None of ‘my’ drivers were competing which on one hand was a shame but on the other it was quite nice as I got to be a bog standard spectator for the weekend and show Gran & Uncle John around the paddock where I ply my trade.
We stopped in the most entertaining guest house not far from the circuit, imagine Fawlty Towers crossed with Father Ted and you are more than half way there.
We had a lovely weekend, and I fell in love with Ireland and the people there.
Fast forward to this year. Ryan was competing at Mondello Park this past weekend in the British GT. I had been hoping to go but couldn’t mug anyone get everything arranged in time.
Ryan came back yesterday and phoned up with the weekend report and we got on to his hotel which his team had arranged. ‘It was like Fawlty Towers’ he said and thus started the conversation.
Ryan: We stayed in a place called Newbridge
Me: I stayed in Newbridge last year!
Ryan: A funny guest house called ‘Irish Fawlty Towers’*
Me: I stayed at ‘Irish Fawlty Towers’. Hang on, did you and your family get a three bedded room?
Ryan: Yes
Me: At the end of the house, first floor…
Ryan: At the end of the wooden corridor, over looking the car park, room 20
Me: I stopped in room 20! I had the bed closest to the bathroom
Ryan: So did I!
Of all the beds in all the world he had to sleep in mine.
All talk of work and race cars was put on the back burner, it was time to compare notes of staying at the guest house where entertainment was literally built in.
I hope they changed the sheets since I was there.
"Driver in same bed as PR" is a scandal not new to motorsport but usually they are there at the same time – we like to be different.
I love coincindences.
* name changed to stop you all booking in to sleep in the same bed as me.
God I LOVE that small world stuff!
