Last night I curled up in bed to read Writing Comedy which is turning out to be a very good tutorial book for the newcomer to the field like myself. Thanks to this book I am finally able to see the trees in the comedy forest.
As I'm reading I remember I haven't got a bookmark and if there is one thing I cannot do to a book it is turn over a corner of the page. It's just wrong. So I fumble in the drawers of the bedside cabinet to find something and come across a box of tarot cards I won a couple of years ago. So I decide I will shuffle the cards, pick one out and whichever it is will be my new book mark. I turn the chosen card over and it is....
The Fool!
This seems very spooky given it is to be a bookmark in a book about comedy. From 78 cards I pick The Fool, the meaning of which is (according to Aeclectic Tarot):
"the Fool is the card of infinite possibilities. The bag on the staff indicates that he has all he need to do or be anything he wants, he has only to stop and unpack. He is on his way to a brand new beginning. But the card carries a little bark of warning as well. Stop daydreaming and fantasising and watch your step, lest you fall and end up looking the fool.
As a card, the Fool ultimately stands for a new start. When it turns up the Querent might be about to make a move, not just to a new home, but new job, new life. There's more than just change, renewal, and a brand new beginning in the Fool, there's also movement, a fresh, exciting new time. "
Just call me Gypsy and cross my palm with silver (I also take cheques)
That is spooky. What's more remarkable, though is your apparent ability to win prizes. A life-coach, gym membership and now tarot cards.
You've just inspired my next post though so you've also won my gratitude today.
PS. I know it looks like I've gone a bit mad with comments tonight. It's just nice to find a blog big enough to read from the start so I've caught up quickly x

Cherry pie - the more comments the better! I am still in that glazed state of wonder that anyone out there is reading...
I have created a catergory 'This Comping Life' which I must get on the way. Perhaps tomorrow's post unless something unbelievably exciting happens in the meantime. Entering competitions is major hobby of mine, and the prizes are a great incentive but it's about so much more...(Eastenders style drumroll)
Like I say - tomorrow's post will tell all!

That is spooky! I am also impressed with your prize winning abilities. How do you win so many great things? Please tell us poor competatively challenged souls.

I don't know if it's possible to "learn" to be funny, but I like the fact that you're trying.

To expound on Jay's comment, one must be naturally humorous in order to hone the "craft" of comedy writing. Like any art, talent must be developed and refined.
You make me laugh, Beki, so I know you have talent.

Thanks all for commenting. As Adm Pooper notes, yes the book is very much about craft and teaching people how to outlet and promote their humour. And Pooper you are very kind to say you thinks I have talent - it quite made my day (and if you see today's post you will realise this quite something as its been rubbish otherwise!)
