(I actually wrote a first version of this post yesterday but the computer ate it, grrr)
Last night I tuned in to the Eurovision Song Contest, a pan-European (+ Israel) screech-fest with an extra touch of excitement for me this year. For the first time ever there was a band which I had not only heard of but had already seen live - the eventual winners Lordi
I saw them at last year's Download Festival and thoroughly enjoyed their uber-theatrical 'monster metal' show. Sadly, before they even took to the stage at Eurovision, their detractors were out. If the Da Vinci Code didn't turn us from the path of righteousness, Lordi would.
I can confirm that when i saw them last year I was very amused for half an hour on a summer's afternoon. I have not sacrificed a chicken or painted my house black since seeing them.
Their latex costumes are nothing more than Gothic pantomime yet this was enough for church leaders to denounce them as satanists whose influence would seep through the tv and turn us to the dark side. What a blinkered view - it would appear the accusation is based purely on the perception of the physically grotesque as evil, nice view, huh? I worry more about the effect on children from the overtly sexualised slips of girls consistently singing about fairytale love than a Finnish man in a Lord of the Rings castoff.
I'm sure the same people will think i am at risk again this year as I am looking forward to seeing, for the first time, Cradle of Filth at Download 2006.
'The Filth' seem to have been fodder for comedy writers lately with both The It Crowd and Think The Unthinkable making reference to the black metal mongers for comedic effect. Now, now comedy writers, don't poke fun at these lovely boys too much. I mean look at them, they are just regular guys with hearts and souls....Okay, so the ownership rights of their souls is something you may need to take up with Lucifer...
Here chickie chickie chick chick....
