In the past I have not liked broken slate to look at. Perhaps it is because I was brought up in a part of the country where we didn't have slate. I have thought in the past it looks messy and tend to prefer the colours of grit.
Then I walked on this - that is the beauty of slate, the sound of it under foot. Came away with a new respect for slate!
