Backwards In High Heels

Yippee!

I am grinning from ear to ear today.

As those who’ve endured this blog since its birth back in April/May, you’ll know I came out of the comedy closet and said this year I was going to give over some time to follow my dream of writing more, notably comedy.

There was a comedy writing competition this year. To enter it meant my taking a big leap, previously having been too nervous to let people actually see what I’ve written. I sent in my pieces and was just pleased to do that as it felt like a big step forward.

So imagine my face when I opened a letter this morning to say I’ve got through to the next round! Supposedly I went white!

I have to write some other pieces now.

I know there were a lot of entrants so I am amazed to get this far and wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't get to the next stage - but I will of course give it my best shot.

So, if over the next week I go very quiet or very hyper you know why! 

Collecting People

I have been tagged by Sharon for a great new idea to help ‘writerly’ people form a ‘people’s collection list’ from which can spring article ideas, research help or help with forming characters in fiction. All those experiences, idiosyncrasies and everyday facts about ourselves that make us such an interesting and varied bunch!

So tagged by Sharon here are five things not generally known about me

1   I’ve had three babies named after me

2   I was extremely ill as an adult with chickenpox during which time my fever made me hallucinate and I thought I was Maureen Lipman

3   I design and sew my own cross stitch cards

4   33 and not a filling in my head *grin*

5   One of my best friends, Liz, died when we were 18 and I believe she sent a message, which was very significant and precise, to me in a dream shortly after her death which I only confided in my mother. A few years later I was speaking to old school friend I had not seen since Liz’s death. She told me a spiritualist had given her a message from Liz – it was word for word what I had been told in my dream.

Remember that it isn’t always the sensational stuff that writers are looking for, it can just as easily be something that you take for granted like having raised twins or knowing how to grow beetroot. Mind you, if you know how to fly a helicopter or have worked as a film extra, do feel free to let the rest of us know about it :-)

Someone had a dream...

Not so long ago we were bemoaning the fact when you asked people what they wanted to ‘be’ their answer was ‘famous’ but famous for apparently nothing. Some could narrow it down to being famous as a singer or an actress but wanted to be famous today and none of that boring climbing the ladder part.

Well, wanting to be famous seems to have gone the by and we are now being urged to ‘live the dream’.

On winning Celebrity Big Brother, Chantelle (actually a non-celebrity at the time, put in by the producers as a twist) was paraded down the winner's catwalk with her mother shouting from the sidelines 'live the dream!'.

"What are you going to do?", quizzed Davina McCall in the winner's interview.

"Live the dream" squelled Chantelle. "I'm living the dream!"

I wish someone would tell me what the dream is. It is obviously definitive as it is the dream not a dream and does it have to involve Davina McCall? Please God no.

As someone who dreams vividly, I often wake up and can’t quite shake the feeling it really happened. It doesn’t matter how bizarre the dream has been there’s always that niggle through the day that something that felt so real must have happened, even if it was marrying Nasser Hussain in the village hall.

One dream that seemed so utterly real on waking was that one of my best friends had an affair with Rolf Harris and started wearing a denim jacket with ‘Rolf’ written across the back in rhinestones. I take it this isn’t the dream she is planning on living though worryingly she has moved to Australia…

So if someone has had the dream and could give me the heads up I’d be most grateful.
