Have you been watching Karl Pilkington - An Idiot Abroad on Sky One? Karl, the rounded headed butt of Ricky Gervais's jokes has been sent to wondorous locations to see if it it broadens his mind, Karl being well known for having some very set views and a quite unique thought process. Actually, it's more about Ricky sitting back in the UK laughing at Karl's expense and thanks to Sky One we all get to enjoy that experience. It's been wonderful, and hilarious, and the best travel programme in ages.
I would trust Karl over Wish You Were Here any day. In fact I wish he would open a travel agency and produce brochures. No pre-conceived ideas, no being pretentious, the man with the spherical head goes and tells it as he sees it, and let's be honest how we'd probably see it too, though having spent a few £k on the holiday we feel compelled to come back and declare it was the most amazing life affirming thing ever (God forbid we didn't get our money's worth)
I would love to see the pyramids, but whenever I look at people's photos from their trips all I see is the top of a pyramid peaking above a sea of tourist's heads. It looks like the first day of the sales, only sandier. And then the next bit of their holiday memoirs is usually a blow by blow account of a stomach upset.
I don't want to be told I should find X, Y, or Z brilliant and that if I don't I am somehow lacking. I will go and make up my own mind, and I preferred to be forewarned if X, Y, or Z is a 5 hour trek from civilisation, surrounded by rubbish and prone to ill winds. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. I'd still like to see many of those locations Karl has been to myself, and would actually be more at ease going now having seen his experience as opposed to the glossy brochure flim-flam promising me heaven on earth.
Or, you know, I might stay at home and eat Monster Munch.
