It is fair to say this last year has been somewhat of a landmark or me - the whole face your own mortality thing was quite something. I am going to borrow the words of Andy Priaulx who was also struck with ill health last year that as you come through it you notice one wonderful thing - it is like hitting a reset button. Suddenly what is, and isn't, important becomes embarrassingly obvious. And now as my health zips down the slip road and back onto the normal motorway, I am not only feeling back with it but happily so. I am not suggesting serious illness as a way of getting you life in order but it's lovely when a grey cloud does turn out out to have a silver lining.
During the last year, in which this blog went dormant, I was still able to hold down the day job mainly thanks to working from home (and actually I got promoted which I partially put down to my heavy steroid treatment making me super efficient!) and I did manage some bits of writing. Sadly I had to fore-go many opportunities but still didn't fall off the radar completely.
Today, I have just returned from a few days in London where I was part of the writing team for Episode 2 of Newsjack (series 5 - time is flying!). It felt like another step, no stride, put last year behind me. I won't bore you senseless only to say I loved my day at BBC Radio Comedy, spending time with other writers, watching the recording and coming home with a sense of achievement that didn't involve a blood test.
So rejuvenated, inspired and hopefully back in a place from which I can springboard I am returning to the blog and picking up the writing reigns with gusto once more.
One of the best parts of the London trip was meeting up for dinner with fellow writer Andrea and having one of those conversations which is punctuated with 'me too' every third sentence! No more dithering, no more thinking my work is used out of kindness, no more waiting to be unmasked as a fraud because Andrea and I are comedy writers so stuff that in your pipe and smoke it world. We, and many others, have a big bag of wonderfulness just waiting to be tipped over your doorstep. You have been warned.
And with that I shall proudly promote tonight's Newsjack episode on Radio 4 Extra 10.30pm but also available as a podcast. Tune in!
