Christmas Traditions

Festive loveliness to you all.

I had a magical night on Wednesday – I saw Roy Wood sing ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ live in Birmingham! Since seeing Santa as a child this is by far the most wonderful thing to befall me at Christmas.

It was part of the Jasper Carrott’s Rock With Laughter gig which was a great night out and I will be booking again for next year without fail. This year the comedians were Lenny Henry, Jimmy Carr and Jethro, none of whom disappointed. Lenny is a British institution so it was wonderful to add him to my ‘have seen’ list alongside Big Ben and Fish & Chips.

Jimmy Carr I wasn't certain what to expect as on tv it can be sometimes hit and miss for me but on Wednesday he really had the crowd – he was like a roman candle of gags. And Jethro, well I laughed till I cried proving you can’t beat the old school sometimes.

Music was Bjorn Again, Journey South ('fraid not my cup of tea), Roy Wood (legendary) and surprise guest Ben Mills who was third in X-Factor, which I hadn’t watched but he got the most amazing reception from the crowd who obviously had. He was superb so I hope he makes good.

The night was rounded off by Suzi Quatro – amazing and yes in head to toe leather. I want to look like that when I’m 56, actually I want to look like that now…

Otherwise my time is spent indulging in the following Christmas traditions:

1 Buying chocolate as a gift and then eating it. Replacing eaten chocolate and wrapping it up straight away. Unwrapping aforementioned chocolate one day later and eating it. Replacing chocolate and so on and so on.

2 Going to the supermarket and listening in on people’s conversations and best of all rows. Favourite snippets from Asda yesterday:

"She likes Snack-a-Jacks, I could wrap them up as a stocking filler couldn’t I?"

"Don’t fucking talk to me any fucking more I’ve bought fucking apples"

Now I spent a lot of time in fruit and veg and found granny smiths, bramley and cooking apples but no fucking apples – she must have got the last of them

3 Going through the end of year news reviews, notably who died this year which always elicits one of three responses:

• "Oh that was sad/tragic"
• "I’d forgotten they had died"
• "In honesty I thought they were already dead"

This year the top three for those responses in order are Steve Irwin, Gene Pitney and Jack Palance

4 Going through the Christmas edition of the Radio Times, marking the programmes I don’t want to miss and then missing them all.

Isn’t Christmas fun?!

LOVE Bjorn Again! And I want some fucking apples! My husband announced Jack Palance's death with the words, "That bloke out of City Slickers has died again." Yep, thought he died years ago.
